Expedition Whitney
On April 4, 2011, Chuck successfully reached the summit of the highest contiguous mountain in the United States, Mount Whitney! This was Chuck's second summit attempt of Mount Whitney as his first attempt resulted in the rescue of another climber.
Many thanks to all of our many friends and family that supported TheSnowShoeClub and the American Cancer Society and making Expedition Whitney a success.
Special Thanks to M.K. and Steve Harshfield, Steve and Suzanne Johnston, the Dr. P. Phillip's Hospital, International Mountain Guides, and the Sierra Mountaineering International.

Update for Expedition Whitney
Chuck and the other seven climbers from the International Mountain Guides climbed for 5 1/2 hours up to approximately 10,500 feet (Lower Boy Scout Lake) during the first day of the climb. After unpacking and getting a few bites of dinner down, a fellow climber reported a medical emergency to the guides and solicited Chuck's medical assistance. The decision was clear that the climber must descend and be escorted to the closest emergency room.
No radio or telephone communications were able to be established so Chuck and two mountain guides, and the patient descended Mount Whitney. Good news the climber did well. Difficult news...Chuck's climb was over at that point. "You can never go wrong by the right thing. It was disappointing to descend but it was morally and ethically right decision to help the other climber. The great thing is I can always come back next year." Chuck said.
Even though we were not able to achieve a summit this climb, we still consider this a success in that we were able to raise awareness and support for the American Cancer Society while rendering aide to the fellow climber who needed the medical attention.
This event is has not concluded...but has only been temporarily been delayed until the next year's Mount Whitney climbing season. Stay Tuned!

Over the past year 'The Norman Family' has sustained three significant blows from the unforgiving disease CANCER!!! Elena recently lost her father Ernesto E. Valadez after almost an 8 year battle with cancer. An old friend and co-worker of Chuck's, Orange County Fire Rescue LT. Mike Ganley recently succumbed to his battle with cancer. And, in July Chuck's Best Man and long time friend Steve Mc Elroy was diagnosed with cancer.
With these significant swathes of cancer, The Snow Shoe Club has decided to collaborate with the American Cancer Society for our next charity "Climbing for Cancer Cures" to make a positive impact for those with Cancer.
April 1st - 4th of 2010 Chuck will be taking on the huge challenge of climbing America's highest peak in the Continental United States, Mount Whitney. Mount Whitney is located with in the Sequoia National Forest (CA) and stands at a formidable 14,495 feet. Make your pledge today to the American Cancer Society and take part in this meaningful and much needed support for CANCER.
Cancer is the second leading cause of death in the United States and is responsible over a half a million deaths each year.
Make your pledge today. If you are having difficulties making your pledge please contact Chuck Norman at
TheSnowShoeClub@gmail.com.
Chuck is paying for all of his own expenses for this climb (airfare, lodging, equipment, guide services and permits) and none of your donation will go towards these expenses. Your donations can be made online or by check to the American Cancer Society and are tax deductible contributions.
Namaste,
TheSnowShoeClub
